Frequently asked questions
Who is the psychology service for?
Children through adults: child psychology consultations, developmental and behavioural assessment, psychological testing and screening, family, couples and marriage therapy, psychological support in preparing for pregnancy, and support during physical recovery.
Is what I say kept confidential?
What you say in the room stays in the room. There are three exceptions, which we always explain at the start rather than keep quiet until they arise: a real risk to your own safety, a risk to someone else, or a child who is in danger. For children and teenagers, we explain from the beginning what will be shared with parents and what will not.
How long is a consultation or a psychological test?
A consultation lasts 50–60 minutes in a private setting. Psychological testing and screening take 90–180 minutes and can be split over several visits. The first session is used to understand your needs, or your child's, before any test or plan.
Do psychologists prescribe medication, and when is someone referred to a psychiatrist?
No. Psychologists do not prescribe medication; that is a doctor's role, specifically a psychiatrist's. If your condition may need medical treatment, we say so plainly and suggest an examination, and if you wish, we work alongside that treatment.
Can it run alongside physiotherapy?
Yes, and that is one reason this service sits in the same clinic. Psychological support runs alongside physical recovery and development, and with your agreement the psychologist and physiotherapist can coordinate within one plan.
