MLDV Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Vodder Method

A far lighter technique than most people expect — light enough that the skin is moved, not pressed. This page covers who it is for, and who it is genuinely unsafe for.

Pressure
Very light — the skin is moved
Duration
45–60 minutes
Works best
With compression & exercise

Why the pressure is that light

Lymph vessels run just under the surface of the skin and their walls are very thin. Pressure firm enough to massage muscle actually closes them rather than helping them drain. So MLDV uses light, rhythmic contact that moves the skin in a particular direction, following the body's map of lymphatic flow.

The Vodder method always works centrally first: the areas near the base of the neck and the armpit are "opened" before the swollen area is touched at all, so the fluid being moved has somewhere to go. That is why a session feels more like quiet, ordered work than a strong massage.

What the research shows

For lymphoedema after breast cancer treatment, a Cochrane review concludes that MLD may give symptomatic relief when it is combined with compression, exercise and skin care. On its own, the effect is limited.

We say it that way because it changes how you choose. If anyone offers lymphatic drainage as the whole treatment for lymphoedema, the benefit will be far smaller than promised. What helps is the package: proper compression, regular movement, well-kept skin, and MLDV as one part of it.

For ordinary swelling after surgery or an injury, the aim is simpler — comfort, less heaviness, and movement that is easier to start again.

Frequently asked questions

It feels too light. Is it doing anything?

The lightness is the method, not a therapist holding back. Firmer pressure closes the very vessels we are trying to help, and on tissue that has recently been operated on it can add swelling. If what you want is a deep massage for sore muscles, that is a different service — say so and we will point you to the right one.

How many sessions are needed?

It depends on what is causing the swelling. Post-surgical or post-injury swelling usually settles as the tissue heals, so sessions are few and mostly about comfort. Long-standing lymphoedema is a condition that is managed rather than cured — there, your own daily routine decides most of the outcome, and we teach it.

Is MLDV for slimming or detox?

No. MLDV is a technique for helping to manage fluid in specific medical conditions. We do not offer it as a way to lose weight or "flush out toxins" — the body already has a liver and kidneys for that, and claims of that kind are not supported by evidence.
